The Skentelbery Boat Yard was founded by Kenneth Skentelbery in 1921 and moved from sites between Looe and Plymouth, before settling on the River Plym..
The company became KR Skentelbery and Sons when Kenneth was joined by John and later Paul. The yard built a wide variety of boats throughout its 68 year history, including:
- Falkland class (based on the Barbary - click here for the Barbary Owners Club)
- Saltram 5 tonners (clinker built wooden sailing boats)
- Mayflower sailiing dinghies (clinker built dinghies still sailing in Plymouth Sound today)
- Saltram yachts, as profiled on this site
There were numerous one off builds as well, including two Gamerus boats for Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The yard was was also extremely busy during the second world war, supplying many boats to the Navy. One such boat, Elsie Isabel, built in 1936, can be seen in the image gallery here.
The yard never grew very large, with a maximum of xx employees at its height, and Saltrams were produced at 1-2 per year through their production run. |
